Lay and Lie

 

"Lay" is a transitive verb. It takes an object. "Lie" is intransitive. It takes no object. So keeping them straight should be easy. And it is, right up until you want to write, "Yesterday he lay/laid on the same bed on which he had laid/lain" his whole life." Here's how to get these right.
